GUITAR LOVE
A magazine for guitar players quotes the following typical sayings of Van Iterson: about the sound of his instrument ` I used to try all kinds of separate hi fi material but I know now that sound primarily comes from the fingers. At home I always practice without amplifiers. That way you’re forced to get the best out of your fingers.’ And a charming `homely’ one about his love for the guitar: `A few times a year I fall asleep on the couch with the guitar on my lap. In the early morning my children wake me up ordering me to go to bed because they want to watch children’s tv’.
Martijn van Iterson may be down to earth but he obviously has a Dream. As he says himself in his straightforward, unaffected way: `I dream of the ultimate guitar solo because as far as I’m concerned it hasn’t happened yet’.
PRIZES GALORE
Born on July 11th 1970 in Leiden, Van Iterson graduated cum laude from the Hilversum Academy of Music in 1993. He was a member of the Jazz Dance Formation ‘All the King’s Men’; was a guest solo player on Dutch National TV and Radio with well known orchestras like ‘The Skymasters’, the ‘Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw’ and the ‘Metropole Orchestra’ and worked with several leading names like Jim Hall and Jean ‘Toots’ Thielemans. In 1996, he recorded with a.o. guitarist Mike Stern and during a project of Stefan Lievestro he worked together with drummer Gary Novak (Chick Corea) and pianist Thierry Eliez (Dee Dee Bridgewater). He played in the cross-over formation ‘D-Code’, in the quintet of bass player Ruud Jacobs, in the quartet of trombonist Ilja Reijngoud, in the ‘Piet Noordijk Quintet’ and has his own quartet with pianist Karel Boehlee, bass player Frans van Geest and drummer Martijn Vink. Prizes were many: second in the Pall Mall Swing Award (1989), second in the Wessel Ilcken Award (1991), Heineken Cross Over Award (1991), the Laren Jazz Award 2012 and last but not least the Bird Award at the North Sea Jazz Festival 2004.
That is in the past he says modestly, without pretence, and wonders – characteristically – whether such a review should be in a story like this.

The music of the group can be characterized as a mixture of latin-american melodies and rhythm, with some dark romantic “porteño” sound and a clear influence from the contemporary jazz greats.
All of the compositions are intentionally designed to try to catch the listeners attention by developing simple or complex motifs in the most musical way possible.
Although the improvisation is clearly one of the most important things of our music, it is also vital for us to tell a story through the arrangements and the music that is written in paper.

Epoxy Quartet is a project led by Dutch pianist and composer Koen Gijsman. In their music, the ensemble investigates the overlap between free improvisation and contemporary composition. While their dynamic and interplay are reminiscent of Dutch free improv groups such as the ICP Orchestra, the ensemble’s lyrical and narrative sound is inspired by contemporary artists such as Little North, Melismetiq, Oded Tzur, and Trygve Seim. Epoxy Quartet provides space to four up and coming jazz performers – Koen Gijsman, Kasper Rietkerk, Tuomas Ruokonen, and Kim Jäger – who are all experienced improvisers and composers in their own right. Together they fuse to a powerful unity – just like the chemicals that produce epoxy.
The name, Epoxy Quartet, refers to Koen Gijsman’s grandfather Joop Gijsman who spent a large part of his life pioneering the production and development of epoxy in the Netherlands. This debut release is dedicated to him. “It means a lot to me that my grandfather was able to listen to this record in the final days of his life.” – Koen Gijsman.
For the album artwork, Conor Hunter used a Hasselblad CM-500 to photograph the Oosterscheldekering, the largest storm surge barrier of the Dutch Delta Works, that was constructed with epoxy from his grandfather’s factory.

BIOGRAPHY
An internationally-acclaimed musician, composer and producer, Charles “Chazzy” Green’s charisma and creativity captivates music lovers of all ages.
Born in Detroit, Chazzy initially received classical training in clarinet and flute. However, something deep inside beckoned to his spirit and drew him to alto and tenor saxophones, as he began to explore blues, rock, jazz and fusion.
While attending Howard University to continue his music studies, Chazzy discovered that his musical roots extended back to his grandfather, who had played trumpet in an all-black brass band in the 1920’s.
He subsequently found that his family’s musical artistry stretched out to include other family members who were well known in the music industry, specifically Lester Bowie and Byron Bowie, esteemed musical legends and founders of “The Art Ensemble Of Chicago”.
Motivated by the musical blood pulsing through his veins, Chazzy gravitated toward musical influences that included Sonny Stitt, Cannonball Adderley and Eddie Harris on saxophone, as well as Earth Wind and Fire, Kool and The Gang, Ohio Players and Jimi Hendrix.
Having established his past and his purpose, and having achieved an early #2 hit (“I Just Can’t Control Myself”) as a member of the group Nature’s Divine, Chazzy left Howard and headed for the music mecca of Los Angeles. Upon arriving, the guitar great Ray Parker Jr . took him under his wing and showed Chazzy the musical ropes, “L.A.” style. Working with Parker, Chazzy contributed in 1982 to the Golden hit “The Other Woman” and in 1984 to the Platinum hit “Ghostbusters”.
He also met and became friends with gospel legend Howard Hewitt, who invited Chazzy to play in his band.
Over the years, Chazzy became more and more sought after and performed in 1994 on Montell Jordan’s hit, “This Is How We Do It” (Platinum), in DJ Quik’s 1998 “Rhythm-al-ism” (Gold) and in Macy Gray’s 1999 “On How Life is” (Multi-Platinum).
Chazzy toured with the Brand New Heavies, Tracie Spencer, Caron Wheeler, DJ Quik, WAR, Johnny “Guitar” Watson, Cameo, and the late legendary Bobby Womack. He is currently on tour with his group Chazzy Green & The Green Backs, The Brothers Johnson and Ray Parker Jr. & Raydio.
Chazzy frequently tours in the Netherlands and Japan where he has recently performed his own shows promoting his last album “The Funky Sax Man” and his earlier albums “I Wanna Sax U Up!” and “Street Sax”.
Indeed, in Japan, where Chazzy lived three years and speaks fluent Japanese, he is something of a legend, celebrated by music lovers across the country. His distinctive brass-and-black alto sax was given to him by Yamaha.
Chazzy Green is a dynamic, soulfully entertaining artist who you can’t stop watching or listening to! He’s one of those rare performers who becomes one with his instrument and completely owns the stage. But his extraordinary range also allows him to blend in perfectly as a supporting musician when other talents command the spotlight.
Chazzy’s musical virtuosity connects from his sax and flute straight to your spirit. And, as a composer, his thought-compelling compositions uplift the heart with their toe-tapping rhythmic grooves and melodies that you will sing for hours.
Get ready for the Funky Sax Man, Chazzy Green, when he comes to a venue near you. He will Sax U Up!
We all go through changes and challenges in our journey through life.
At the right time and place, there will be someone who will put his hand on your shoulder and say or play “It’s Alright”.
And it will come through clean and clear with a positive smile and a Detroit accent!

Nick van de Bos -Toetsen
Frans Bouwmeester-Bas
